Two Moons
For the Fifteen by Fifteen group this year’s challenge is to create six quilts inspired by books. I chose making quilts reflecting on the books of contemporary Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.
Right now, I am reading the 7th book written by him so I have a lot to choose from.
My first quilt is inspired by his book 1Q84. The book had 1300 pages but it was very easy to read no matter that I have read it in English, not my native Lithuanian. As the title suggests, it is a dystopia to George Orwell’s 1984. There are many lines of plot in it: it is a love story, a fantasy, and a novel of self-discovery where things are happening in two parallel worlds. The “other” world has two moons in the night sky and the year is 1Q84. So my first quilt is of two moons in the night sky:
Other quilts
At the end of January I received a wonderful news that my quilt Color Play has been accepted into SAQA global exhibiton Abstract: Textural Elements. The exhibition will premier in Heidelberg, Germany in September that makes me even happier because my son lives in Heidelberg and I plan on being there in September too:
At the end of January I drove to Alytus, a town in the South of Lithuania. For 4 days I stayed with my friend who lives there. It was worry free time and I was able just to sit and hand quilt a bed quilt that I am making for my friend Kathy. I call it Lake House quilt. It measures 100×100 inches but the hand quilting is going very well and rather fast.
After spending four days in Alytus, I went to Druskininkai, a Lithuanian resort town with mineral springs. For 5 days I had physical therapy procedures for my back problems. The weather was nice and the sanatorium Egle has offered a lot of water procedures, good food, pleasant environment. I plan on going there some time again.
January was really a month spent with no wasted time. Besides what I mantioned I made two more quilts to enter into venues that I can’t go public for now. I will in the future, when the time is right.
