Scent, Feel and Taste of Lithuania

June 20, 2020 Filed Under: Travel 5 Comments

It doesn’t matter how young I am, my birthday is on June 19th every year. Sun rises at 4:41 and sets at 21:59. The day is 17 hours and 18 minutes long. That’s only 1 minute shorter than the longest day of the year.

Scent

I love my birthday. The summer is in full bloom, and the fall is still far away. The air has this wonderful sweet scent, that I call scent of Lithuania. It comes from meadows, from the modest herbs that can’t brag about beautiful blooms. The flowers like these:

On the same note peonies have always been my birthday flowers as well, and there was an abundance of them yesterday:

Pretty soon the haymaking starts and then different kind of the scent will fill the air.

Feel

The weather on my birthday was beautiful, and I invited few of my friends and my daughter’s family to visit a dairy sheep farm in the country. Of course, the air was filled with the scent of Lithuania. We looked around and got to see and touch all kinds of animals: sheep, pony, goats, chickens, bunnies, gees, turkeys and many more:

Touching pony
Touching baby sheep
Mama turkey with her gees babies- she gets confused by their behavior
These chicks are only one day old
This one is few days old already
More baby sheep
Feeding the babies
Ram and male goat were friendly
Waiting to give us milk
I am milking!

Taste

We got to taste sheep milk:

We also tasted different kinds of home made sheep cheese:

Shish kebab is not a traditional Lithuanian dish but it is very popular now when people are spending time outdoors:

My daughter made me a birthday cake. It was very good, it just melted in the mouth:

This was one of the best my birthday celebrations.

The farm is owned by a young couple who started it just few years ago. In such a short time they already achieved a lot, and I hope their enthusiasm and hard work will pay off. They also started providing logging for travelers and those who want to spent time close to the nature and animals.

You can visit them by making an appointment on their Facebook page Gamtos Kiseneje , to see more photos on Instagram account. Camping is also available.

If you ever decide to come to Lithuania, visit me as well!
